The SCF asks respondents if they have taken out a payday loan in the past year. Payday loans are unsecured loans that are typically small and short-term. Because these loans generally carry interest rates that far exceed those for conventional forms of credit, usage of payday loans is often a signal that an individual cannot obtain credit by other means.36 In 2016, 3.4 percent of families reported taking out a payday loan, down from 4.2 percent in 2013 and 3.9 percent in 2010.
